How to measure mesh and woven bags for a quotation
A useful bag measurement starts with an empty sample and a shared definition of width and length. A filled-bag photograph alone cannot describe the finished bag reliably. Use the checklist below to make your first enquiry easier to compare.
Send flat width × finished length, the units, and photos showing exactly where each measurement starts and ends.

Start with an empty, relaxed bag
Place the bag on a flat surface and smooth obvious folds without pulling the mesh or stretching the fabric. Include the whole bag in one photograph so the supplier can see the opening, bottom seam and any side folds. Measure the same sample that appears in your photographs; mixing photos from different styles can lead to a quotation for the wrong construction.
- Photograph the front and back.
- Include one close-up of the bag opening and one of the bottom seam.
- State whether the sample is new, used or damaged.

Define width, length and gussets separately
For a flat bag, record the width across the empty bag and the finished length from top edge to bottom edge. Show a ruler or tape with both endpoints visible. If the bag has side gussets, describe them separately and ask the supplier to confirm whether the quoted width is measured folded or expanded. Do not combine flat width and expanded circumference in the same comparison.
- Write the units next to every dimension, for example centimetres or millimetres.
- Say whether a top hem, extended lip or closure allowance is included in the length.
- For a gusseted bag, send photos with the folds closed and opened.

Keep dimensions separate from filling performance
The size of an empty bag does not by itself establish how much product it can safely hold. State what will be packed, the intended net contents weight, the filling method and how the top will be closed. Onion or potato size, headspace and handling can affect the practical fit. The quotation should distinguish your target packing requirement from a verified loading result.
- Describe manual or machine filling and the closure you use.
- Provide target contents weight separately from empty bag weight.
- Arrange a filling and handling check before accepting a new size for bulk use.

Turn measurements into a comparable enquiry
Send the dimensions with a product reference, order quantity and destination. If you do not have an existing sample, mark unknown fields as “to discuss” rather than choosing an arbitrary measurement. Before ordering, agree the measurement method and dimensional tolerances in writing so the approved sample and bulk specification use the same basis.
- One overall photograph plus dimension, mesh or weave, opening and seam close-ups is a useful starting set.
- Keep the same reference on your photos, sample and specification sheet.
- Do not assume a photograph provides a precise mesh opening or fabric thickness.
